How did it all begin?
In 1994, a new language school was set up in Cracow - PROLOG
. It can be best described as a team of highly motivated,
enthusiastic teachers who are open to new ideas. It includes
Poles as well as foreigners - native speakers of the languages
taught. We concentrate on teaching three languages: English,
German, and Polish as a foreign language. From the very beginning
our teaching methods have been determined by communicative
approach, prevalent in teaching foreign languages for many
years now. It allows our students to develop all language
skills at the same time thus giving them the opportunity to
maximize the activeness of the language at every level of
learning. English and German teaching programs for particular
levels of proficiency were designed on the basis of the teaching
and examining standards of the University of Cambridge Local
Examination Syndicate (now Cambridge ESOL) and the Goethe
Institute (now Goethe Institut Internationes) respectively.
While choosing a course book, we look for materials which
allow us to prepare a framework for teaching programs for
each level and which guarantee continuity of the material
through the numerous levels of proficiency that we teach.
That is the reason why we have chosen series of materials
by renowned publishing houses: Longman, Cambridge University
Press, LTP (Thomson and Heinle) and Hueber Verlag. In stark
contrast to the above, the offer of available materials for
teaching Polish as a foreign language was extremely poor.
At the beginning, it was dominated by materials which did
not explore the communicative approach, which, according to
us, did not guarantee effective learning of speaking and listening,
or reading and writing skills in Polish. To make things worse,
there were no established standards of teaching Polish as
a foreign language, making effective teaching even more difficult.
Only in recent years have significant changes in this field
taken place: several more modern teaching books appeared on
the market and the system of the state certifying examinations
was started. Taking advantage of the many years of experience
in teaching foreign languages and utilizing the experience
of teachers cooperating with us, we decided to prepare our
own materials for teaching Polish as a foreign language, addressed
to the universal, adult learner. This opportunity was given
to us by the European Union program Socrates/Lingua
2 . PROLOG put forward a project to be realized within
the framework of the program. The project consisted of designing
a concept, writing, testing and publishing a series of modern
teaching books.
The materials you are looking at now were designed in accordance
with the concepts of the European system of language teaching
(Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages) , as well
as guidelines of the State
Certification Commission for Polish as a Foreign Language
(Państwowa Komisja Poświadczania Znajomości Języka Polskiego
jako Obcego) .The series, in its current form, was designed
for the learners preparing for the first certifying examination
at the level PL-B1.
